Design Trend: Brass

A great design trend that is popping up everywhere is Brass. Brass can be a great accent and it doesn't have to be dated either. When some people think about brass they picture the old door knobs that are a glossy right brass and are not that attractive, and I will  be the first one to admit I'm one of them. So how do you make brass less unattractive? 

Brass that is shinny can be a little harsh, and I believe thats why some people think of it as unattractive. To remedy this try to find an antiqued brass or vintage brass. The difference between bright and brassy and aged and brassy are huge when adding a great deal of it to your room. And lets face it, when it comes to metals they tend to be a large part of a room's appearance. They are on your door knobs, your light fixtures, your drawer pulls, so a less abrasive metal is not only more appealing but more relaxing.

Lets Talk Tampons Ladies!

Yes I know. Tampons don't have much to do with interior design but I was think about this earlier today and wanted to write a short article on the subject.

A great deal of women today use tampons. They are one of the two main sanitary products used during a women's period. So, why do I want to write about them?

I wanted to discuss their impact on the environment. There is a decision that must be made when purchasing a carton of tampons: cardboard or plastic. If you haven't thought about it the before and just grabbed the one that may be smaller and fit better into your purse, think about it. A large amount of tampons are being used everyday. What if all the applicators were plastic?

Plastic is not biodegradable. After you use that application once and only once you throw it away to be sent to a landfill where it will sit for the rest of the lifespan of this planet.

Where as a cardboard applicator is biodegradable. If all the women who use plastic changed to cardboard, think of the waste that would be reduced. I have always use cardboard. It pains me to see people that use plastic. It is not only a waste of plastic but that plastic will never be recycled. Think about it: How many women really take their applicator and throw it into the recycling bin?

Now for those who can learn to not use an applicator that is most ideal. OB is the brand that is the most eco-friendly. They are smaller than most tampons ( the boxes are small as well so you will need to look a little harder). the lack of an applicator, smaller size and smaller box all decrease this tampons impact on the environment.

So the next time you are in the grocery isle and are deciding which tampons to pick, consider your impact of the environment. The number of tampons in that box are also the number of unused non biodegradable plastic tampons that will never be recycled.
